Homeward Bound, Addison County's Humane Society

Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society, is a private and independent 501(c)(3) shelter dedicated to protecting the wellbeing of homeless, abandoned, and abused/neglected animals. We are located in Middlebury, Vermont.

It’s said that a penny saved is a penny earned and here at Homeward Bound this absolutely rings true!  

Every time an item from our Wish List is donated, it enables the shelter to redirect the money we would have spent on those items to animal care, most often addressing special medical needs. Whether it’s a dog toy, milk replacer for orphaned kittens, timothy hay for bunnies, or laundry detergent, each and every gift to the shelter is a help to us. Thank you!!

Homeward Bound Wish List

Through all of life’s ups and downs, our pets are there for us with unconditional love and affection – in this day and age, something we all need.  The reality is that some people struggle so much financially due to the cost of living, job changes, or life events, that they find themselves unable to meet the basic needs of their beloved pets.  Rather than see them surrender their pets to Homeward Bound, we strive to keep pets and their people together, where they are most happy and loved. Our PetCORE program makes this a reality.

Each spring, Homeward Bound braces for the onset of “kitten season” – the time of year when most kittens are born.&nbsp; Despite our best efforts, there are still dozens of unwanted kittens born into the region every year, many of which become orphaned and are in desperate need of care.&nbsp;Most cats will go into heat in mid-January with the increasing daylight hours.&nbsp; The feline gestation period is about 60 days, so the first litters of the season start arriving around mid-March each year. While it is possible for a cat to get pregnant any time of the year, the majority of cats seem to have litters in early to late spring.&nbsp; This is why animal shelters like ours see the greatest influx of kittens from spring through summer.Kitten season triggers the greatest need for volunteers and supplies during the year.&nbsp; Foster families donate their time and a loving, temporary home and Homeward Bound provides food and other necessities for the cats and kittens.
